  • Re: CPM vs CNM

I'm a CNM who has worked all my years as a midwife attending home births. I practiced as an L&D RN for 10 years prior to becoming a midwife. I used to be one of those CNM's who spoke highly about CPM's and thought, "Let's just get along."  My opinion has changed recently as I'm precepting a CPM ...
  • Re: advice on precepting midwifery student

I found the NARM document very vague and I was looking for something with more detail.  I did meet with this student and against my better judgment decided to continue with the student/preceptor arrangement with the understanding that I will be writing up my own guidelines that we will both agree upon.  The number one agreement ...

  • Re: advice on precepting midwifery student

Thanks so much for your input.  It reinforces that my gut reaction to this situation is not so far off.  I will be searching for those documents on NARM's website.  Your timing was great--I'm meeting with this student today.  I'll let you know how it goes.

  • advice on precepting midwifery student

I'm having some difficulty precepting a midwifery student who also happens to be my assistant of 2 years.  She seems to be having difficulty letting go of the assistant role and accepting the role of student.  Are there any other midwives here that have precepted a midwifery student and might offer some helpful guidelines to ...

  • Re: Obtain experience first or go directly into midwifery school

22 years ago I was making this very decision.  I decided to work as an L&D nurse after obtaining my BSN to get 3 years of experience before becoming a midwife.  Due to life circumstances, 3 years became 10 years.  I then went to midwifery school, planning on practicing in a hospital or birth center.  Then I ...

It depends upon what type of midwife you want to be.  Do you want to work in a hospital, birth center or home?

  • Breech babies everywhere!

I'm asking for some help from the wise women here.  I have 2 first-time mamas with breech babies.  Both are 28 weeks.  I'm nervous at this early gestation because I just had a second-time mama with a breech diagnosed at 29 weeks gestation that I couldn't get turned by 39 weeks when she went into labor.  She had a ...

  • Mercy in Action Midwifery School?

Has anyone had any experience with Mercy in Action Midwifery School?  I'm a home birth midwife and my assistant is looking into becoming a CPM through this school.  She makes it sound too good to be true.  Anyone have any experience with this distance education school?
  • Re: PPH - what to do at a home birth?

Since I practiced as an L&D RN for 10 years before becoming a home birth midwife (12 years ago), I'm more comfortable with medicines rather than herbs.  The worst hemorrhage I've had in my 12 years occurred at about 2 years in practice.  Almost immediately following the birth, the flood gates opened.  I was without ...

  • Re: what is your favorite part of a birth?

This is a great topic.  I, too, remember a time when mama touched the top of her baby's head prior to birth and the smile that came on her face as she looked at me was wonderful.  I'm often asked by my patients (usually when I'm performing some mundane duty or less-than-wonderful task as part of my service to them) why ...
