In Australia at the moment there aren't really any "good, holisitc, natural" programmes. Midwifery can be studied in a university, either as a 3 year nursing degree with an additional year as a specialist in midwifery, (nurse-midwife) or a 3 year bachelor of midwifery degree. While the B.Mid is the better option, from a midwifery perspective, it is still absolutely hospital-based. There are no other legal options.
There is a new legislation on the cards that, if passed, will mean that independant homebirth will be illegal. not saying you should run away from Oz, but you should be informed and aware. We can work to stop this legislation, which may see parents who birth at home fined up to $30,000 for trying to hire a MW. :(
