    Kambucha and Agave in Pregnancy

Safe at any time? specific times? unsafe?  Susun Weed says that agave should be avoided "before and during" pregnancy, but I have a client who says she's getting mixed reviews. Can't find anything on kambucha.  Thanks!

I've never heard that about agave - what was her reasoning?

I think that Dom is probably one of the best resources for kefir and kombucha information. His information is extremely thorough. Here is a link to his kombucha page, but I can't find anything related to pregnancy.

He also has a wonderful yahoo email group

Everything I've read before has suggested to not drink it during pregnancy since it works so well to detoxify. Is she drinking it for the probiotic/gastrointestinal benefits? Maybe she could skip the kombucha during pregnancy/breastfeeding and drink dairy and/or water kefir instead?

Re: agave, Susun Weed writes under "Before and during pregnancy, completely avoid: ... Steroids and herbs containing steroid-like factors, including Agave, Ginseng, Licorice, Hops, Sage (which also decreases lactation)." p13 Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year.

Re: Kombucha and Agave in Pregnancy

Personally, I think if a woman has been drinking Kombucha prior to her pregnancy, she can continue.  I got my Kombucha culture from Kombucha America and the guy there says pregnant and nursing women can drink it.  I did, but in moderation.  It does detox the liver, and it can cause gastrointestinal discomfort and detox symptoms it if you start with a "high dose".  If I were just starting out drinking it while pregnant, I'd start with 1 ounce every day for a few days, then two ounces a day for a few days, then three...

Just my two cents.  Certainly not scientific evidence either way, but might be helpful.

I agree that if a woman is used to kombucha, there's no problem continuing it in pregnancy.  Also agree about starting slowly if the woman is new to kombucha.

As for Agave, I did not know about the potential hormonal effects.  Thanks! I would also be concerned with effects on triglycerides and insulin metabolism.  For more info. check out my blog:   http://abundantbearth.blogspot.com/2008/03/blowing-lid-off-agave-nectar.html
