One hesitation before applying to a program... on-call

I feel called to be a midwife.  But before I start school, quit my job, and change my life entirely, I have one strong hesitation....  How do midwives cope with being on-call 24/7?  I'm concerned that I won't be able to sleep or go to a movie or grocery shopping, just waiting for the phone to ring all the time.  Is this silly? Normal?  How do you handle this?

I have been on call 24/7 for 17 years as a midwife.  Feel free to call me if you would like to hear from someone very experienced what it is like.  972-896-8841 in Texas.   Molly Germash, LM, CPM  Heart's Desire Midwifery Care

I have been mostly on call for about 30 years!!  It is a life style to which you become accustomed.  For me, not drinking and going to bed early, getting up early anyway meshes with this life.  You have to accept that you will miss some christmases and birthdays and anniversarys', it's inevitable. Being flexible with other appointments helps.  I go about my life as usual until I get the call but I always have an idea in my head about how I will deal with a sudden call to labor.  Usually you'll have some heads up when a mama is ready but there is the occasional call requires you leave the house in a HURRY. It is a committment for which there is no other comparision yet, no other life leads to such rewards.  It is challenging but for me there is no other way.

You are welcome, I know that for most women today a life of midwifery service is counter to the culture of 'me'.  It is not about advancement, security,  benefits, vacations, retirement.  It is about love.
