I would suggest going to the MANA website (mana.org) and finding out if Direct-Entry Midwifery is legal in your state and what their educational requirements are. Some states will allow you to be a licensed midwife if you attend a state-approved school, some states will license you if you are a CPM, and in some states, direct0entry midwifery is illegal and you can only practice midwifery as a CNM.

There is no way you must begin. I would suggest taking an introductory course or reading a book like "Heart and Hands" by Elizabeth Davis. Some midwives start by working as a doula. It really depends on what your life experience has been...
