    Re: Travelling Midwifery

Hi Kristina!  I'm going to be in a very similar situation and was wondering if you had any advice or could share your experience with me.  I am currently living in NYC but am moving to Sorrento, Italy (my husband's hometown) in March.  I am searching for an English speaking midwife, naturaly birthing center, etc. in the Naples region.  I would be so grateful for any help..

    Thank you!

    Hi Heidi,

First of all...congratulations! This is a very exciting time for you and your family!

The website I found that helped very much was:

I found my 2 midwives there. You should look near the area you are moving to. I did a quick search and it looks like the closest ostetriche (midwife) on the site near you is Rome. I think from the site though, you may be able to send a few emails and find someone closer. Otherwise, midwives are generally willing to travel a few hours(which would be fine...there will be time for them to get to you-they will also sometimes stay nearby when you are getting close). The most important thing is meeting them and feeling comfortable. You also asked about natural birthing centers and if I am not mistaken, the only natural birthing center in Italy is The Margherita at Careggi hospital in Florence.  I found another center near WSiena but when I called them, they said they are not open right now.

I would highly recommend finding someone to stick by you and be on your side during the birth. Your husband is great but, they go through their own feelings during the birth...and you want a professional, that the doctors will listen to! I am not sure if you know but, there is a very high cesarian rate in the South of Italy(I don't mean to scare you...I just want you to be prepared!).

Please feel free to message me with any more questions. I have done tons of research and also have had a beautiful, healthy boy here in Italy:)

    xo, Kristin

Thanks so much for all this info, Kristina!!! And congrats on your baby boy!!
I know... The C-Section rate in the south is unnerving for sure.  I'm just going to have to make my birthing plan clear to my midwife and ensure that we're on the same page and can work together.
Were you able to have a natural birth?  Did the hospital allow your husband to stay with you?  Sorry for all the questions...anything you can share about your labor and delivery is welcome and appreciated.

    Hi North123,

My name is Jenny Hall, and I am a midwife that lives in Minnesota. I do already have one client due in March and two in April, but I work with another midwife and would possibly be able to leave my practice with her to attend to you if you are still looking for someone. My website is if you want to look up more information about me.

Please feel free to email me at if you want to talk about how this might work.

    Re: Travelling Midwifery

Does anyone have any information on how a CNM can do traveling?  I start the DNP/CNM program this fall.  Wanting to know if traveling abroad is mostly for CPM or if I could find options to do so as a CNM...
