Self Prenatal Care
Prenatal care is what you do between your visits to your midwife or doctor. What that means is that the self care you give yourself is the most important you can do. You have in your power as a pregnant woman to avoid most complications. Tom Brewer taught us that pregnant women who eat 80-100 grams of protein from a wide variety of foods including fruits and vegetables and salt their food to taste can avoid most complications. He noted that eclampsia, pre-eclampsia, low birth weight, prematurity, hemorrhage, long labor and others could be avoided. He noted that veterinarians know animals must be fed well when pregnant so why don't doctors know that about women. The midwives and doulas I am acquainted with know this. The other thing you can do to prevent complications in get a midwife!
Michel Odent says, "eat sea food and be happy." He is referring to nutrition and the emotional state of the woman. Stress takes it's toll on the woman and her baby. Try to reduce the stress in your life and find joy when you are pregnant as much as you can. Remember birth is sacred and you have been given this holy trust that is unique to motherhood. May you have a sacred and uplifting birth. For birth is truly holy ground. To me anyone dealing with pregnant women or birth is standing on holy ground as should be in awe and respect.
